About this deal

Obviously, while I wasn’t really enjoying this book anyway, Kristoff just had to throw in some homophobia. I’ve missed these for the past few months and so would like to get back to comparing covers (and hopefully I will be updating this page with a new banner. In the ensuing battle, Liathe arrives and slays the other vampires, while Gabriel duels Danton until Dior stabs the distracted vampire in the back with a sword smeared with her blood, destroying him. Empire of the Vampire has been out for only a year, with no sequel in sight yet, and it’s insane that it already has almost 30 special editions. The US edition has cover art illustrated by Jason Chan, one of my favorite artists who also did the US cover art of The Nevernight Chronicles.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Though I doubt that Jay Kristoff and his million copies sold will truly care at the end of the day what I have to say about it.Various forms of profanity were unleashed, and cursings felt like a form of art being wielded brilliantly to augment emotions, comedy, and narrative. One thing that did take away my enjoyment, and I know might bother other readers, is the opening with a sex scene.

Their relationship is heartbreaking and heart pounding to behold as they try and negotiate their meaning to each other, not daughter, not father, not mentor, not friend. Her adventures, struggles, and character open up significantly as we see her through the neutral and largely indifferent lense of Gabe's sister. Everyone has a limit, and while some may completely disregard an author after their behaviour, for some that line may not have been crossed. Pursued by children of the Forever King, drawn into wars and webs centuries in the weaving, and ravaged by his own rising bloodlust, Gabriel may not survive to see the truth of the Grail revealed.Gabriel is a silversaint, a member of a holy brotherhood dedicated to defending the realm and church from the evil creatures of the night. The language, too, though I could have done without the “thee’s” and “thou’s” used by the elder vamps; it felt artificial at times, particularly in contrast to the modern language, which uses many French words. Aside from the mature themes and creatively gory violence, the protagonist de León and his pals are hella ribald.

Dior, Celene, and several other female characters take center stage in this book, with Gabe taking a backseat. It’s only in faerie tales that everything works out for the best with a magik spell or a prince’s kiss. Witnessing the character’s brotherhood, love, and desperate struggles in the dark and merciless world, one step at a time, was utterly rewarding. The words were a kind of magic, taking me by the hand and sweeping me into lands unseen, times unremembered, thoughts unimagined. And this time out, the "calm" before the storm gives us a lot of time with our favorite characters and introduces some great new ones.Gabriel de Leon has saved the Holy Grail from death, but his chance to end the endless night is lost. BOOK PREVIEW: Empire of the Vampire (2 Editions) by Author Jay Kristoff This is at the very top of my TBR. A story of legendary battles and forbidden love, faith and brotherhood, the Wars of the Blood and the Forever King, and the quest for humanity’s last remaining hope: the Holy Grail.

From New York Times bestselling author of the Nevernight Chronicle, Jay Kristoff, comes the most-anticipated fantasy sequel of the year. In book 2, Gabe is still trapped and telling his story, and so is his long-lost sister Celene- who we have now learned is an Esani Vampire with some wild abilities.Daylight has become as scarce as hope as vampires slowly take over the continent, leaving death, destruction, and the zombie-like wretched in their wake. If you’re taking part it would be great if you leave a link so I can take a look at what you’ve chosen. In other words, after the great difficulties I had with the first half, Empire of the Vampire increasingly became a compelling dark fantasy I couldn’t put down with each page I read in the second half. The whole sample was intense, laced with a sarcastic humour as you find out more about Gabriel de Leon, Dior and feel one step closer to knowing why he is being help captive.
