I experience her writing as completely authentic - she has seen things that many of us will only ever hear or read about - but she maintains respect and compassion for the women and girls whose lives are made even more precarious as a result of senseless conflicts. For me it resulted in a very important but hard to swallow book, and some serious reflection on my career goals.

However bad it is here it’s infinitely better than some folks have it so the next time somebody feels like a good whinge about life in general this is a book I’d recommend they read. This contributes to the fact that despite the strong focus on overseas midwifery, the book feels relevant to all midwives currently practicing. As a former pupil at The Grove School in Market Drayton, Anna noted how immersing herself in nature, particularly in Shropshire, has helped her to practice mindfulness and remaining calm in stressful situations throughout her work. Kent shares her extraordinary experiences as a nurse, midwife and mother, illuminating the lives of women that are irreparably affected by compromised access to healthcare.

For me, this book stimulated lots of questions and reflection on so many levels and left me thoughtful and in awe.
