Many of them were already too young to have been there for the band’s first coming- the triumphant baggy rush of 89/90 but here they were waiting for their own piece of history. Ultimately there was good reason. Given the inevitable comparison to that first album, the band let their insecurities get the best of them to the point where they doubted their own ability to pull off an adequate successor. Tensions reached their peak when the drummer, Remi, left the band a mere three weeks before a tour to support the album was set to begin. A year later, guitarist John Squire announced his departure, leaving singer Ian Brown and bassist Mani to try to salvage what was left on the band’s fragmented reputation.

Actually, name a band that has managed successive “five star” albums for its first two releases? Thought not. Of his drumming style, in 2004 Rhythm Magazine commented that Wren was "funkier and more subtle than any drummer in the genre [indie] had ever been" and he was, "economical, soulful, and inventive". Rhythm Magazine labelled him a drummer hero, stating: "you know him best by his ability to always play it cooler than cool". [3] Live performances [ edit ] During that period of downtime, the Stones Roses were beset with a whole range of “issues”, collectively and individually, but the sense of expectation from fans and critics alike became perhaps the biggest problem of all. I guess the great shame is that this one was not only their follow-up, but it was also their swansong.

The band have got an Akai S1000 which they use mainly in the writing process, for recording loops, slowing them down, turning them round, to create a groove to write around [both 'Driving South' and 'Straight to the Man' were written in this way]. They haven't felt the need to upgrade to anything newer because it does the job for what they want. They just use it to create basic loops, and get them onto their Portastudio.
